Step One – Understanding How To Make Money With Shopify

To make money with Shopify, you must first understand the platform and how you must utilize it to your advantage. Shopify is an online e-commerce platform that allows you to create an online store incredibly easily. Whereas once creating an online store was a massive undertaking requiring advanced knowledge of programming, Shopify makes it so that anybody can make a fantastic online store in just a few hours. This is how we’re going to make money with Shopify – by creating a niche online store and marketing it to the right people.

We’re going to be making money with Shopify through a concept known as dropshipping. This is where we create a store and sell products that we import from a supplier. If you have your own products to sell already, you can still follow this guide, we’ve got you covered! We will cover completely how to make money with a Shopify store.

Now you want to decide on a niche. This is the area your products will focus on. It is always better to have a niche rather than be a general store! Think about hobbies that have products attached. Travel, fitness, photography. The possibilities are endless. Here’s a guide if you’re really stuck.

Step Two – Signup For Free

Now you understand making money with Shopify, it’s time to sign-up for a free trial. This will give us 14 days of Shopify access to start making money. After the trial ends, it costs $29 a month for the basic plan. This means you need to make $29 on Shopify in 14 days for it to pay for itself. That’s just $2.07 per trial day – easy!

Shopify makes it easy to make an online store. Play around with themes and customization and create a store that looks great. Match it to your niche. You can also create a simple logo in Shopify’s logo editor. It doesn’t need to be complicated and it will add a layer of legitimacy. Check out Shopify’s app store and use them to enhance your store. I personally like in-cart upsell, for example. It is important that you love the look and feel of your store to be able to make money with Shopify!

Step Three – Finding Products For Shopify

Okay, so what are you going to sell? It’s the single most important part of creating a store that’s going to make you money and integral to solving how to make money on Shopify. You should have a niche by now, so choosing products should be easy. Outdoor niche? Sell camping equipment, backpacks, etc. Cool, but where do I get them? This is where the ingenuity of Shopify apps comes in. There is an excellent app called Oberlo which will allow you to import products from AliExpress, a Chinese supplier that sells literally everything and usually very cheaply. You can use this app to import products and sell them at a markup price without ever owning an inventory of products.

This model is known as dropshipping, and lots of people have had huge success in making money with Shopify with this model. It is now easier than ever and especially easy with Shopify. Now, you don’t have to dropship. Maybe you create your own products and are trying to sell them online. Maybe you have a cheap local supplier and think you can flip their items for a higher price. If you would rather stock a physical inventory of goods, you can buy in bulk from wholesalers such as Alibaba or use services like Salehoo which I have had some success with in the past.

Use the Oberlo plugin for your web browser and navigate to AliExpress. Search for products with cheap or free shipping that will fit in your store. Add the products to your store, Oberlo will guide you every step of the way. It’s as easy as it sounds: import the products with a button, change their title, descriptions and select images (yes, images are imported for you) You also need to choose a fair pricing structure. You can use the built-in multiplier to set all prices to increase by, say, 1.5x. I’d suggest importing at least 20 products to give your store a completed feel. It’s easier to sell a lower-price item, but you will need to sell more. You get to choose what type of items you sell – cheap or high-end.

Step Four – Selling on Shopify

Now you should have a store that looks good and is populated with products. Ready to make money with Shopify? Not quite! You now need to market your store. Don’t worry, you really don’t need a marketing degree. Just some basic digital skills will get you the results you need to start making money with your store. Create a Facebook page for your store (this is where that logo comes in handy!) Next, search for groups related to your niche, like hiking groups using my earlier example of the outdoors niche. Promote your store in these groups. Use discount codes (discount section on Shopify) for better results. This should be enough to get you some initial sales.

You will also need to learn about Facebook advertising. If you’ve never used Facebook ads, Here’s a helpful post on that. Facebook advertising might seem daunting, but it’s actually very simple. You can target people based on just about anything thanks to the copious amount of data we willingly hand over to Facebook. Target by age, location, and hobbies to fit your niche. Again, use discount codes for better results on your adverts.

One of the best strategies you can use for Facebook advertising is to run many adverts with different variations for $5 each. Then, refine your adverts based on your results. Continue to modify your best performing adverts and ditch the worst performing ones. don’t blow most of your advertising budget on a single advert!

Step Five – Growing and Making Money With Shopify

You should now have a functioning store that is making some money! Yay! So, what next? It’s time to scale. Reinvest your profits in advertising and invest in areas of your store that will benefit. With every sale, you also acquire an email address. This means you can email your customers with new products or discounts on your store to make them come back for more! Use MailChimp to send emails en-mass to your list. It will integrate with Shopify and is really easy to use, and it’s free (up to 2000 list size).MailChimp Logo
